Ingredients

  • 16 oz string cheese sticks Mozzarella and Cheddar
  • 2 cups Panko bread crumbs plain or regular Italian
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Herbs seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika or regular
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk room temperature
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

Fried Mozzarella Cheese Sticks: From Prep to Plate

  • Cut each string cheese stick in half to create shorter, manageable pieces.
  • In one bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined. In another bowl, mix Panko bread crumbs, Italian herbs, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Dip each cheese piece into the buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then roll it in the Panko mixture, pressing gently to adhere. Repeat for all pieces.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to monitor.
  • Fry cheese sticks in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  • Remove fried cheese sticks with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Equipment

  • Deep Fryer or Heavy-Bottomed Pot
  • Cooking thermometer
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Plate or Baking Sheet
  • Slotted Spoon

Notes

  • For a healthier option, try baking at 400°F (200°C) for 10-12 minutes or air frying the cheese sticks.
  • Freeze breaded cheese sticks on a baking sheet before storing to fry directly from frozen.
  • Ensure oil is hot enough before frying to prevent cheese sticks from exploding.
