Ingredients

  • 1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 medium garlic clove peeled and smashed
  • 1 lemon juiced
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup water add additional tablespoons as needed for smooth consistency
  • Salt to taste
  • Garnish drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil, chopped cilantro, parsley, or sprinkle with paprika

Instructions

Stepwise Method

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients. Drain and rinse the garbanzo beans thoroughly under cold water. Peel your garlic clove and smash it to release its flavor.
  • In your food processor, add the rinsed garbanzo beans, smashed garlic, tahini, and lemon juice. Blend on high until the mixture starts to come together.
  • With the food processor running, gradually add in the 1/4 cup of water. Continue to blend until the hummus is smooth and creamy. If it’s too thick, feel free to add an additional tablespoon of water at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Once your hummus is creamy, taste and add salt as needed. Blend again to incorporate the salt evenly.
  • Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl. Drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and sprinkle with your choice of garnishes such as chopped cilantro, parsley, or paprika for an added touch of flavor and color.

Equipment

  • Food processor or blender
  • Measuring Cups
  • Spatula
  • Citrus Juicer

Notes

  • For an ultra-creamy hummus, try peeling the garbanzo beans before blending to achieve a smoother texture.
  • Store homemade hummus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week; stir in water or olive oil if it thickens.
  • Freeze hummus up to three months in a freezer-safe container; thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.
  • Experiment with flavors by adding roasted red peppers, fresh herbs, or spices like cayenne for variety.
  • Always rinse canned garbanzo beans to reduce sodium and improve flavor.
