Ingredients

  • 1 loaf bread cut or torn into ¾ inch cubes, about 12oz or 4 cups in total, preferably 1-2 days old
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for that perfect crisp and golden color
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder imparts a lovely, savory garlic flavor without overpowering
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano adds a fragrant, herby note
  • ¼ teaspoon salt enhances all the flavors

Instructions

  • Cut or tear your bread into roughly ¾ inch cubes. Using bread that is a day or two old is ideal because it’s firmer and will crisp up nicely without becoming too soft or soggy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt. Stir well until the ingredients are evenly combined and fragrant.
  • Add the bread cubes to the bowl with the seasoning mixture. Toss gently but thoroughly, making sure each piece of bread is evenly coated with the olive oil and spices.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Bake the croutons for about 12-15 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even browning. Keep a close eye toward the end to avoid burning. The croutons should be golden brown and crispy when done.
  • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the croutons cool completely. Use immediately, or store in an airtight container once cooled.

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat

Notes

Use day-old or slightly stale bread for best texture. Cut bread into uniform cubes for even baking. Avoid overcrowding the baking sheet to ensure croutons crisp properly. Toss halfway through baking for even color. Adjust seasoning to taste, such as adding paprika or chili flakes. Let croutons cool completely before storing to prevent sogginess. Variations include using different herbs, adding cheese, or making them spicy or sweet.
