Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 3 cups rustic bread or baguette crust removed and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Crushed red pepper optional
  • Herbs de Provence, basil, thyme, rosemary, chili powder, onion powder your choice of spices
  • 4 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure even baking and perfect crispiness.
  • Cut rustic bread or baguette into 1-inch cubes. Stale bread works best for holding shape during baking.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine extra-virgin olive oil, unsalted butter, minced garlic, and your choice of spices. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add crushed red pepper if you want heat.
  • Add the bread cubes to the bowl and toss until evenly coated with the oil and spice mixture.
  • Sprinkle finely grated Parmesan cheese over the coated bread cubes and toss again. Spread croutons in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet if using.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even crispiness, until golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and let croutons cool completely on the baking sheet before storing in an airtight container.

  • Substitute olive oil with avocado oil for a different flavor and health benefits.
  • Omit Parmesan or use vegan cheese for a vegan-friendly version.
  • Experiment with different dried herbs and spices to customize your croutons.
  • Store croutons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.
