Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 pound large shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Sauce

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the low-sodium soy sauce, chicken broth, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and the cornstarch mixed with water. Set this mixture aside.

Sauté the Aromatics

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to let them burn.

Cook the Shrimp

  • Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. Optionally, sprinkle in the red pepper flakes during this step.

Add the Sauce

  • Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked shrimp in the skillet. Stir well to coat the shrimp evenly. Let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and envelop the shrimp.

Finish with Sesame Oil

  • Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat and stir in the sesame oil for extra flavor.

Serve and Garnish

  • Serve hot, garnished with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Enjoy over steamed rice or with stir-fried vegetables.
