Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm water activates the yeast
  • 1 package active dry yeast essential for leavening
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar feeds the yeast
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt enhances flavor
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil adds richness and moisture
  • 2-2.5 cups all-purpose flour adjust based on dough consistency

For the Topping:

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter melted, for brushing and flavor
  • 2-3 teaspoons garlic powder for garlic flavor
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes adds color and herbaceous note
  • drizzle extra virgin olive oil for finishing touches
  • 0.5 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese separated for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water with the active dry yeast and granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt to evenly distribute the salt.

Step 3: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the dry ingredients along with the olive oil. Stir with a wooden spoon until a dough begins to form.

Step 4: Knead the Dough

  • Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as necessary, until smooth and elastic.

Step 5: First Rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 6: Shape the Rolls

  • Punch down dough gently, divide into 12-15 equal pieces, shape each into a ball, and place on a greased baking sheet leaving space between rolls.

Step 7: Second Rise

  • Cover shaped rolls with kitchen towel and let rise for another 30 minutes until puffed up.

Step 8: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) while rolls are rising for the second time.

Step 9: Brush with Butter and Add Seasoning

  • Melt remaining unsalted butter and mix in garlic powder and dried parsley flakes. Brush mixture over rolls and sprinkle half of the Parmesan cheese on top.

Step 10: Bake

  • Bake rolls for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped on the bottom.

Step 11: Finish with Olive Oil and Cheese

  • Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the rolls and sprinkle remaining Parmesan cheese immediately after removing from oven.

Step 12: Serve Warm

  • Allow rolls to cool slightly and serve warm. Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored for later.
