Ingredients

  • 3 pounds potatoes a mix of russet and Yukon Gold
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 cup unsalted butter 1 stick, plus more for serving
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt plus more for cooking water
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 0.5-1 cup sour cream optional
  • chopped fresh chives for garnish

Instructions

Best Mashed Potatoes Recipe: How It’s Done

  • Start by peeling and cutting your potatoes into large chunks. Rinse the potato chunks under cold water to remove excess starch.
  • In a large pot, fill it with water and add a generous amount of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then add the potatoes and garlic cloves. Reduce to a simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander and allow them to sit for a few minutes to steam off excess moisture.
  • Transfer the potatoes back to the pot or a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and begin mashing. Gradually pour in the whole milk while continuing to mash until you reach your desired creaminess.
  • Stir in the sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. If using sour cream, fold it in now. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl. Top with a pat of butter and sprinkle with chopped chives. Serve immediately.

Equipment

  • Large Pot
  • Potato Masher
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Serving Bowl

Notes

  • Drain and steam the potatoes well to avoid watery mashed potatoes.
  • Avoid over-mashing to prevent a gluey texture.
  • Add sour cream for extra creaminess and tang.
  • Reheat leftovers with a splash of milk or cream to restore texture.
  • Try variations like cheesy or herbed mashed potatoes for festive twists.
